Betelnut Eco Lodge grew from friendship, trust and years of connection with families and elders in Wainyapu Village. Rather than beginning as a tourism project, we developed organically from a shared respect for the land, coastline and local way of life. Today, we remain intentionally small, family-led and community-connected. Our lodge is powered by solar energy, built with local materials and guided by a belief that travel should support continuity rather than consumption. We welcome guests into a living community where culture is approached with humility, relationships matter more than transactions, and every stay is an invitation to slow down, be present and belong.
We offer beachfront accommodation for families, couples and solo travellers in teak wooden bungalows, traditional bamboo rooms and a spacious family bungalow. Our rooms use open-air design, natural ventilation, mosquito nets, fans and limited solar-powered outlets for a comfortable off-grid stay. Full-board meals are included, with mostly vegetarian dishes, locally sourced ingredients, fresh fish when available and sourdough baked on site. Guests can enjoy village walks, surfing, paddleboarding, traditional fishing trips, nature outings and family retreats shaped around screen-free play, cultural exchange and time together. The experience is simple, restorative and closely connected to the ocean, community and natural rhythms of Southwest Sumba.
