FAQs
Sumba beaches: common questions
What is the best beach in Sumba for swimming?
Weekuri Lagoon. It is a sheltered saltwater lagoon beside the ocean, so the water is calmer than on Sumba’s exposed beaches. There are no lifeguards and the rocks can be slippery, so take water shoes.
Can you swim at Mandorak Beach?
Sometimes, when the sea is calm. Mandorak is a tiny cove that opens straight onto the Indian Ocean, so it is better treated as a sightseeing stop than a swimming beach.
When should I visit Walakiri Beach?
At low tide, about 45 to 60 minutes before sunset. That is when the tidal flats reflect the light and the small mangroves make the “dancing trees” scene. It is around 30 minutes from Waingapu.
Which Sumba beaches can I see in one day?
Weekuri Lagoon, Mandorak Beach and Pero Beach are all in the Kodi area of Southwest Sumba. Swim at Weekuri, stop at Mandorak, then finish at Pero for sunset.
Where is the best surf in Sumba?
Miller’s Right in Tarimbang Bay is a long right-hand reef wave for confident intermediate and advanced surfers. The main season is around April to October, and it works best on a south to southwest swell at mid to high tide.
Do Sumba’s beaches have facilities?
Mostly not. Many beaches have no vendors, so bring water, snacks, small cash and sun protection, and don’t count on mobile signal.
