The easiest way to get to Sumba is to fly from Bali. Nonstop flights from Denpasar take about an hour to Tambolaka in the west of the island, or about 1 hour 20 minutes to Waingapu in the east. Most travellers fly into Bali first, then take a short domestic flight to Sumba.
Flights to Sumba have changed in the last year: different airlines now fly the Bali route, and the Tambolaka airport has a new name. This guide sets out what flies where today, which airport to choose, the ferry options, and how to get from the airport to where you are staying.
Quick Summary
| Planning Detail | What to Know |
| Fastest route | Fly to Bali (DPS), then a nonstop flight to Sumba |

| Bali to Waingapu (WGP) | About 1 hour 20 minutes, with Sriwijaya Air |
| Which airport | Tambolaka for Southwest, West and Central Sumba; Waingapu for East Sumba |
| Other flights | Kupang to Tambolaka or Waingapu, and Lombok to Waingapu |
| By sea | Ferry from Sape on Sumbawa to Waikelo, and Pelni ships to Waikelo and Waingapu |
Step 1: Get to Bali
Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), in Denpasar, is the gateway to Sumba. It has direct flights from major cities in Australia and Asia, and connections from Europe, the Middle East and the Americas through hubs such as Singapore and Doha.
From within Indonesia, Bali is well connected to Jakarta, Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Lombok, with several flights a day. There are no nonstop flights from Jakarta to Sumba, so plan to connect in Bali.
If your international flight lands in the afternoon or evening, we recommend a night in Bali. The flights to Sumba leave in the morning and around midday, and a missed connection usually means waiting until the next day.
Step 2: Choose Your Sumba Airport
Sumba has two airports, at opposite ends of the island. Pick the one closest to where you are staying.
Tambolaka (TMC), Lede Kalumbang Airport
Tambolaka Airport in Southwest Sumba was renamed Lede Kalumbang Airport in November 2022, after the first regent of West Sumba. The airport code is still TMC, so either name works when you book. It is the airport for Southwest Sumba, West Sumba and Central Sumba, including Kodi and Weekuri Lagoon. Waikabubak, the main town in West Sumba, is about an hour away by road.
Tambolaka also has more flights from Bali, with three airlines on the route, so it is usually the easier choice.
Waingapu (WGP), Umbu Mehang Kunda Airport
Waingapu Airport serves East Sumba and the town of Waingapu, the base for Walakiri Beach, Wairinding Hill, Tanggedu Waterfall and the savannah around Puru Kambera. Choose it if you are spending most of your trip in the east.
Flights to Sumba
These are the nonstop flights we found on Google Flights for November 2026. Schedules change often, so check the airline before you book.
| Route | Airlines | Flight time |
| Bali (DPS) to Tambolaka (TMC) | Batik Air, NAM Air, Sriwijaya Air | About 1 hour |
| Bali (DPS) to Waingapu (WGP) | Sriwijaya Air | About 1 hour 20 minutes |
| Kupang (KOE) to Tambolaka (TMC) | NAM Air | About 1 hour |
| Kupang (KOE) to Waingapu (WGP) | Wings Air | About 1 hour 15 minutes |
| Lombok (LOP) to Waingapu (WGP) | Wings Air | About 1 hour 20 minutes |
Wings Air, which used to fly from Bali to Tambolaka, no longer appears on that route. We found no flights between Tambolaka and Waingapu, so if you want to see both ends of the island, plan to travel overland.
Tips for Booking Your Flight
- Book direct or through a trusted platform. Book on the airline’s own website or a trusted Indonesian booking platform, rather than lesser-known agents that often charge more.
- Book early for busy times. Flights fill quickly in the peak travel season, around Indonesian holidays and during the Pasola festival.
- Check your baggage allowance. Free checked baggage depends on the airline and the fare, and several airlines have changed their allowances recently. Check it when you book and buy extra in advance if you need it.
- Bringing a surfboard or bike? Wings Air charges for surfboards and bicycles separately from your baggage allowance. Check the rules with your airline before you fly.
Getting to Sumba by Sea
Ferries are slower and less reliable than flying, but they suit travellers island-hopping through Nusa Tenggara.
- Sape to Waikelo. The KMP Cakalang ferry between Sape, on Sumbawa, and Waikelo, in Southwest Sumba, started sailing again on 24 May 2026. The route had stopped in November 2023 after the pier at Waikelo was damaged.
- Pelni ships. Pelni’s KM Wilis calls at both Waikelo and Waingapu on a route that also takes in Labuan Bajo, Ende and Kupang. Its timetable is in the Pelni app.
Ferries in this region are often cancelled when the sea is rough, especially in the wet season. Check the current timetable with ASDP or Pelni before you travel, and leave spare days in your plans.
Step 3: From the Airport to Your Accommodation
Arrange your transfer before you land.
- Hotel transfers. Many resorts and lodges meet guests at the airport. Ask when you book, and send your flight details.
- Car and driver. You can hire a car with a local driver for your stay, who can collect you from the airport.
